老潘来信:我为什么喜欢旅行,这就是答案!

在美国土生土长的潘维廉教授,有着一股子“牛仔气质”:天生对旅行、探索情有独钟。

上世纪80年代,他从2万里之外的美国飞到了中国福建。而后,在中国的30多年间,他又先后进行了两次“环华自驾游”,丈量中国的大地,探访多彩的风俗,见证伟大的发展......一眨眼,当年的小潘已经成了老潘。

这位“老牛仔”慈祥地坐在电脑前,在脑中凝练着他在旅途中收获的见闻与感悟,为我们写下了这样一封信。

I've forgotten most of what I've bought over the years because they broke, became obsolete, wore out or were lost. But though I’ve forgotten things I've bought, I remember well the things I experienced. It reminds me of my 20 years of school. I don't remember much of what teachers said to me but I remember very well the things they had me do—such as learn music, make science experiments, or visit the teacher's sheep farm.

这些年来我买的大部分东西我都忘记了,因为它们要么坏了,要么过时了,要么磨损了,要么就是丢了。虽然我忘记了我买过的东西,但我很清楚地记得我所经历的事情!我想起了我20年的学校生活。那些老师对我说的话我可能记不清了,但我清楚地记得老师让我做的事情——比如学音乐,做科学实验,还有参观老师家的牧羊场。

So I prefer to spend my money not on things but on experiences such as learning guitar—I bought this guitar 44 years ago—or learning martial arts, or cooking—or my favorite pastime, cultural touri *** .

相比购物来说,我更愿意把钱花在体验上,比如我学了吉他——这把吉他在我身边已经44年了!此外,我还学武术、烹饪,而我最喜欢的消遣是文化旅游!
